Supporting Media Literacy in the RI Curriculum

House Bill 5664, introduced in March 2017 and currently under study, would mandate the teaching of media literacy in RI schools. (See text of the bill here.) COLA advocates this initiative. School library media programs remain the most effective means of supporting media literacy, and under the current Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) grants for the teaching of media literacy should defray the costs of school library media programs.

COLA’s response to the bill was written by Vice-Chair Cheryl Ann McCarthy and posted to the Legiscan comments page for the bill.
