Remembering David Bates

COLA mourns the passing of Board member David Bates, who died March 8 at age 74. following a brief illness. David was a member of our Board of Directors for only a short time before his illness took him from us but he was an active participant.  His avid support of our efforts on behalf of libraries and of our effort to establish a speakers bureau made him a valuable member.

David was a friend libraries could count on in the RI legislature.  He was a member, then co-chair of Rhode Island’s legislative Karla Harry Joint Commission on libraries.  He was very proud of his involvement in library matters and often spoke of the good feeling he got from having his name on the plaque at the entrance of the Barrington Public Library extolling his role among those responsible for the conversion of the Peck School into the new and expanded library.

We will miss David; he will always be a part of our organization in spirit as we strive, as he did, to improve the quality of life for all Rhode Islanders.
